Kam Yiu-yu Press Freedom Awards


The 4th Annual Kam Yiu-yu Press Freedom Awards Winners


    A series of reports on Illegal structures of Henry Tang and C.Y. Leung’s home by Ming Pao Daily’s Investigative Reporting Team and Li Wangyeung by Cable TV’s reporter LAM Kin Seng were the winners of the Print Media and Electronic Media categories of the Fourth Annual Kam Yiu-yu Press Freedom Awards out of 36 entries. The two winners were awarded the prize of $3,000.

    In this year, there are lots of outstanding entries. The winning margins were extremely slight. The Foundation decided to award three outstanding entries with merit award and a prize of $1,000. The three merit awards went to a series reports on D&G Prohibition on taking photos on their shops by Apple Daily and Sharp Daily, Human Rights situation in China by RTHK’s Headliner Production Team and The Anti-Falungong Campaign and Freedom of Speech by RTHK’s reporter Nina Chang.

    The Board of Kam Yiu-yu Foundation expressed their gratitude to the six judges for their patience and effort. They are Professor Joseph Man Chan, School of Journalism and Communications of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Professor Chan Yuen Ying, Director of Journalism and Media Studies Centre of The University of Hong Kong, Professor Lee Chin-chuan, Head of the Department of Media and Communications of City University of Hong Kong; Professor Leonard Chu, retired Professor of the School of Communications, Hong Kong Baptist University; Mr. Ching Cheong, Chairperson of Kam Yiu-yu Foundation and Ms. Mak Yin-ting, Chairperson of Hong Kong Journalists Association.

    The winners shared their experiences during the ceremony. The experience of winners told us that not only an insightful story, but also the spirit of perseverance and the skill of overcoming obstacles were necessary for outstanding work.

    In order to promote press freedom and high-quality reporting, the Foundation held a seminar after the awards presentation ceremony. The Hon. Legislative Council member, Ms. Claudia MO; Mr. Simon CHU, Founder of Archives Action Group and commentator Mr. POON Siu To, will discuss how the freedom of information is under threat and what people can do in response to this situation.

    The Foundation Committee expressed its gratitude to the media industry for its support. It hoped the industry would continue with its persistence and to flourish in the Fifth Annual Kam Yiu-yu Press Freedom Awards.
