I am a HK citizen and Ming Pao reader who is deeply concerned over Ming Pao's situation as well as press freedom in Hong Kong.

I am especially concerned about Ming Pao’s recent decision to replace its chief editor. No matter what circumstances led to this decision, events since have shaken my confidence in the continued editorial independence of the journal.

You, as an experienced businessman behind a well-established media company must understand that a newspaper is not merely a private organization but also a social entity. Its chief editor plays a significant role in deciding the paper's editorial direction as well as defending readers' right to know. 

The sudden replacement of Ming Pao's chief editor has been of great concern to the community, raising considerable doubts in the minds of the Hong Kong people about what exactly is going on. This is how serious the problem is. I am particularly concerned that the move is a prelude to a radical shift in editorial direction. 

Ming Pao's fearless coverage of news and its unremitting efforts to uncover the truth have been its most valuable assets. Hence the abiding loyalty of its readers. The change in editorial leadership initiated by its top management has not only undermined the loyalty of its readers but has also had a negative impact on press freedom in Hong Kong. 

Ming Pao is one of the most influential Hong Kong media over the last half century in eyes of the Hong Kong people. I hope the management of Ming Pao will temporarily suspend its replacement decision, give a pledge pro-actively to the editorial staff by signing the “Editor's Charter” that the paper will continue its independent editorial direction, free of self-censorship, ensuring the paper remains in the hands of a chief editor who is thoroughly familiar with and fully understands local affairs, and capable of maintaining the high professional standards that the Hong Kong people expect of Ming Pao every day.
