HKJA Statement on the New Year's Night Riot in Mong Kok

The Hong Kong Journalists Association condemns in no uncertain terms the violence that rocked Mongkok last night, resulting in several journalists being hurt.

There is no place in Hong Kong for the resolution of political or other differences within our community through violence. Least of all wanton attacks on members of the media whose job is to inform our people what exactly is happening on our streets and in our community without fear or favour.

A TVB cameraman filming a torching was attacked with a broken glass bottle, sustaining a hand wound while trying to protect himself. Another cameraman from Cable TV was hit in the head by a brick thrown by rioters. A journalist from RTHK, was hit by bricks thrown by rioters. His audio equipment was smashed.

A Ming Pao journalist was ordered to leave a double-decker where he was filming the riot. Upon exiting the bus, he was pushed onto the ground; hit on his head and kicked by some policemen. This was despite his production of a press card. The journalist required a stitch on his head.

There is no excuse whatsoever for resorting to violence to resolve differences.

We call on the police to bring the perpetrators to book, and peace and order be restored immediately.

We would also remind the management of media organizations their obligation to provide front-line journalists with adequate protection gear for their reporting on riots.
