Dear all,
As you would be aware May 3 is World Press Freedom Day. This special day was promulgated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, one of Hong Kong’s very own core values.
It is also a day to pay tribute to those, especially journalists, who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession and the freedom of expression. Thus it is a day to inform the general public and, especially the younger generation, of the crucial role that the media and journalists play in the development of a healthy, democratic society.
We are, therefore, joining hands with other international and local freedom of expression advocacy groups, to co-organise a series of events to mark Hong Kong’s participation in this global effort. Details will be announced in a press conference to be held on April 30, which also marks the 100-day count-down to the Beijing Olympics.
On 1 and 2 May, from 10 am-5 pm, we shall be holding a seminar on Press Freedom in Hong Kong and China at Novotel Century Hong Kong in 238, Jeffe Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
On 3 May, from 12 pm-5 pm, we shall be holding an Arts Fair at Chater Garden which will, among other things, feature various kinds of performances, e.g. music, movement, etc, while various NGOs will man booths to introduce themselves and/or entertain the public.
The HKJA will be having its own booth to explain to the general public our function and role in Hong Kong, as trade union looking after the interests of media workers and as defender of some of Hong Kong’s core values, namely freedom of expression in general and press freedom in particular.
There will also be games at our booth.
We look forward to meeting up with you at the fair and also look forward to your support.
