As pointed out by Prof. Lee Chin-chuan, representative of the panel of judges, the high quality of the 14 entries from electronic media and 18 entries from the print media have laid a good foundation for the Kam Yiu-yu Press Freedom Awards, which aim to enhance awareness of press freedom and professionalism among journalists.

Mr. Ching Cheong, Chairman of the Board of Kam Yiu-yu Foundation, wishes that the awards continue to serve the objectives of the Foundation, which are to encourage Hong Kong reporters to pursue excellence in reporting and safeguarding press freedom by providing professional recognition to outstanding Hong Kong reporters and reporting in the area of press freedom.

To benefit more colleagues and after considering the differences between radio and television news reporting, the Board of the Foundation has decided to divide the electronic media into two categories, so that from this year on there will be three categories, namely, Radio, Television and the Print media. The Foundation is also considering limiting the number of entries an individual reporter may submit so as to encourage more journalistic workers’ participation. Details will be announced in due course.

The Kam Yiu-yu Foundation was set up to commemorate the spirit of newsmen embodied by Mr. Kam Yiu-yu and Lee Tze-chung, who jointly decided to publish a historical editorial in Wen Wei Po twenty one years ago. The Board of the Foundation set up the Press Freedom Awards accordingly to encourage the promotion of press freedom and the pursuit of excellence.

The Fund, which is managed by the Hong Kong Journalists Association with an independent account (Hong Kong Bank: 002-5-439977,HK Journalists Association – Kam Yiu Yu Memorial Fund), stood at $526,194 after a donation made by Kam’s family member. The Board of the foundation wishes more donation will be made from all walks of life so that the foundation can last longer to safeguard the freedom of expression in general and press freedom in particular.
